Saina Nehwal is a professional badminton singles player from India. She has won over 24 international titles including seven super series titles. In 2009, she attained the world no. 2 rankings whereas, in 2015, she climbed to world no. 1 ranking. Saina has represented India three times in the Olympics and she won a bronze medal in her second appearance.

Saina’s family relocated to Hyderabad from Haryana, and Saina was 8 when she started her badminton training. Both her parents are renowned badminton players and play a great role in Saina’s success. Saina started her training at Lal Bahadur Stadium and received her first training from Nani Prasad. She was also trained by other renowned instructors, namely S. M. Arif and Pullela Gopichand.

Saina was attracted to badminton mainly because it was her parents’ dream to be national players. Saina had badminton in her genes and her first exposure to badminton came when she used to go in a pram to the club where her mother used to play badminton.

Saina started an early career but the expenses were too much for her parents to bear. It was at this time that she started winning tournaments and sponsors started taking interest in her, and things gradually took a turn.

Saina’s success story teaches us all to never give up whatever the situation be and that fighting through difficulties makes a person strong. Saina once woke up with blisters on her leg but she did not stop and appeared for the match that was scheduled for that day. Saina mentioned that she was happy to have won a match when she was unwell and that she was elated with her fighting spirit. Saina had suffered numerous injuries being a sportsperson but that didn’t stop her and make her disheartened. She came back with zeal and later went on to win the Australian Open Trophy.

Saina’s success story teaches everyone to be determined about their dreams and work towards them with enthusiasm and willpower. Saina mentioned that it is important to enjoy the victories as one works hard to achieve them.
